Do you have council supplied green waste and regular rubbish bins?
We can dispose of grass, leaves and rubbish in supplied bins free of charge. If you prefer, we can take waste off-site for a small fee.
Alternatively, grass cuttings can be left to decompose naturally on your lawn or garden. The “chop and drop” technique adds nutrients to your soil and is kind to the environment.
Did you know residents are responsible for mowing nature strips in Victoria?
Many people think nature strip mowing is the job of the local council. While councils technically own the nature strip, they do not have a legal obligation to maintain it. In other words, if you’re a resident of Hume City Council, it is your responsibility to mow the lawn on the nature strip. Even if you’re a tenant, most rental agreements require tenants to mow the lawn.
For safety reasons, Hume City Council requires grass, mulch or low growing groundcover on nature strips to be kept below 400mm. Residents are also expected to control or remove noxious weeds. How long does it take to mow a lawn?
Depending on the length of grass, a small lawn should not take long to mow at all. We allow 30 mins to complete a maintenance mow for a small nature strip or courtyard. We include edging, minor rubbish pickup and raking of cut grass.

How often should lawn be mowed?
The most common grass varieties grown within Hume City Council are warm season or drought tolerant varieties. These grasses can be safely cut to around 40mm high. How often your lawn should be mowed depends on the growing season.
We recommend every 2 to 3 weeks in spring to autumn, and every 4 to 6 weeks in winter. We can vary this according to your budget or preference.
